While the biggest comic book convention on Earth may be located roughly 5,500 miles away from my house, it doesn’t mean I can’t get in on all the action. Sure, nothing can replicate the feeling of being part of the Hall H crowd at the San Diego Conference Centre this past weekend, yet the wonders of the internet have given us the next best thing by allowing us to watch all the trailers dropped from the comfort of our own home.
With Marvel and the Disney machine decidedly absent from proceedings, it was left to the other studios to show what they’ve got and, while the choice of new film trailers was far more limited than it usually is, there’s certainly enough there to raise those nerd hype levels adequately.
So, without further ado, here are all the San Diego Comic Con 2018 trailers ranked from best to worst...
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was an odd film. It promised much but didn't quite follow through in the way many fans had hoped. However, what we have here feels like a step up in every conceivable way.
Putting aside Johnny Depp’s controversial casting for one moment, he appears to fit the villainous bill here perfectly as the uber-blonde Grindelwald which, together with fun action, and some incredible looking visuals, promises to turn up the volume on its predecessor in all the right ways, while offering Harry Potter fans the full-on wizardry fix they've been craving since the original series ended.
Well this looks like fun. Daft and goofy in all the right ways, Shazam is pretty much Big with superpowers, and that high concept comes across perfectly here with a lightness and humour that's largely evaded the DC film world thus far.
Unlike the Aquaman trailer, the comedy here appears well placed and appropriate for the source material, with some good one liners and fun visual gags here and there. Add to that some charming performances from the young cast, as well as an appropriately wide-eyed and overtly silly turn from Zachary Levi and it looks like this may be the moment DC finally turn the corner and embrace their fun side.
GLASS
Although Split wasn’t perfect, there's no denying it was a return to form for much maligned director, M. Night Shyamalan. What’s also hard to deny is Unbreakable being one of Shyamalan’s best films to date, so using Glass to combine the two in a bit of retroactive universe building is a fascinating concept.
As the finale to the trilogy you never saw coming, Glass promises to expand on the themes of superheroes and supervillains from the previous films, while taking an interesting route through mental illness that’s sure to offer some patented Shyamalan twists along the way. All in all, this is a fantastic tease for an intriguing film, and one that appears to offer the biggest twist of Shyamalan’s career…making Bruce Willis look like he cares again.
Of all the studios at SDCC, the one under the most pressure to perform (especially with Marvel stepping out of the ring) were DC. So far, only Wonder Woman has been an out and out success for the studio and it’s fair to say that Aquaman is under the cosh to get the studio back on track.
With lumpen dialogue, cheesy one liners, and sketchy CGI (which I’ll let slide for now as it always tends to be the case with early trailers for these sorts of blockbusters) I can’t say this trailer has me too pumped for the film but there’s certainly enough there to offer hope. While questionable, the visuals are promising and the look of Atlantis feeling like Wakanda under the sea is particularly exciting. If nothing else, Aquaman promises to be a blockbuster unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Solid is about the best way to describe the trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Nothing more, nothing less. Big monster movies are big monster movies and I’ve often felt there are very few ways to put together a trailer for one that offers anything particularly new or exciting.
That’s precisely what we have here with a lot of smashy smashy stuff, a load of bland city destruction, and some fairly portentous dialogue about the end of the world. It all feels about 20 years out of date and nothing to get the pulse racing Saying that, the tease of Godzilla clashing with the likes of Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah for the first time on this scale is at least something look forward to.
